It’s really an actors’ picture, and the fun is in the fireworks between Washington and Hackman, each of whose characters articulates solid reasoning behind his decision. There are no easy villains, and there’s no easy way to tell right from wrong–that’s what makes the nuclear stakes so terrifying. Director Tony Scott (who directed Quntin Tarantino’s Tru Romance script) called in Tarantino to punch up the dialogu, which is why, for example, the sailors talk about Silver Surfer comic books. With generous amounts of good luck and good timing, 50 First Dates set an all-time box-office record for the opening weekend of a romantic comedy; whether it deserved such a bonanza is another issu altogether. It’s a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with The Wedding Singer no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humor that Sandler fans have come to expect. The movie sneaks in a few heartfelt moments amidst its inviting Hawaiian locations, and that trained walrus is charmingly impressive, but you can’t quite shake the feeling that too many good opportunities were squandered in favor of easy laughs. Like Barrymore’s character, you might find yourself forgetting this movie shortly after you’ve seen it. –Jeff Shannon

Inept, Pollack enlists help from seasoned journalists Moses Ashford (Morgan Freeman) and Lee Wallace (Kevin Spacey), who do help Pollack crack the case, but not without warning Pollack against the perils of devoting one’s life to exposing fraudulent behavior. Tru journalists, in Edison Force, are superheroes. Though it’s difficult not to envision Timberlake as the pop star he is, it is always a pleasure to see the handsome LL Cool J in a uniform and wielding guns. The most convincing actor in Edison Force is Kevin Spacey, whose hard-boiled acting imbus his part with a Mean Streets quality. Action-packed, this film deserves mention in the history of cop films, though in terms of style, it has nothing on great film noir. –Trinie Dalton
